Born in Bogotá, Colombia, of German descent, Dan came to the United States when he was seventeen. Already interested in typography and graphic design he went on to be formally trained in graphic design at the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP).

His love of beer was inherited from his father, a proud German, who enjoyed and passed on his love for Schwarzbier. More recently, Dan aquired the craft beer bug and is now an avid home brewer.

As a professional designer, he has worked as an art director for over fifteen years. His passion for typography earned him a feature in the book Bodytype by Ina Saltz.

His last book, Typography for the People, was published by HOW Books in 2010.

Dan resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and still enjoys a good Schwarzbier.

In July of 2011 Steven brewed his first batch of beer. Inspired by horror movies, he designed a logo and identity for his new, small batch home brewery. Spooky Brewery was born.

On most weekends, he can be found in his backyard sporting a Halloween T-shirt, listening to Iron Maiden and brewing up a batch of hoppy ale.
